The Out-of-Towners
Here are some folks that have visited us from outside New York. They came in from all over the world. These two ladies came from Chicago and LA respectively. Both women came in feeling lukewarm to desperate about their hair, and left feeling sky-high. One of these women (we'll let you guess which of them) got triple-takes from her co-workers when she got back home.

Stand up haircuts
Yosh is a seventy-three year old Japanese man, affiliated with Color Design Salon in San Francisco, CA. He is master hair stylist and an educator who teaches advanced training exercises throughout the country. I recently attended one of his seminars in New York. Yosh works with the bone structure of the face to really fit the hair style to the client's look. He accomplishes this by cutting dry hair while the client is standing up.
Think about it. When a client is sitting, they're chatting with you, or they get lost in their own thoughts. They are not mindful of their hair being cut; they are not in the moment. The hair stylist has to therefore remind the client to look up instead of down, to tilt their head this way and that. It complicates an already complicated process. Mind you, not everyone wants to come to a salon and stand up, but for those clients who are up for it (no pun intended), we’re excited to work with them.
The contrast between a sitting client and a standing client is remarkable. The stylist is able to see the client's hair move in a natural way. The client becomes more aware of their hair, and is able to see the effects of the stylist's work in progess. It is a rejuvenating process for both client and stylist.
We’ve already started implementing these techniques. Our clients are now walking out of the salon, not just satisfied, but feeling transformed…even those clients who have been coming to the salon for a while.
Cutting hair dry and cutting hair when standing makes a great difference, not only with the salon experience, but with the ultimate quality of the cut. As a stylist, you are able to cut a hair style into a woman’s hair that fits how the client approaches life's challenges, and suit the energy of the cut to the energy of the woman or man.
At least three dozen people have gotten their hair cut this way in the salon since I attended the seminar and these techniques are actively changing the style of cuts we’re creating for our clients. Our cuts are becoming more versatile because this process allows you to give the client a few different options with the same haircut. This does not replace the regular sit-down experience at the salon, but for anyone interested, we would love to demonstrate the difference.

XFusion Keratin Hair Fibers
We just started using a great new product called XFusion Keratin Hair Fibers. It is an immediate soluion for thinning hair, working by clinging to and filling out existing hair. XFusion comes in a variety of natural hair colors and is made from pure keratin protein--the same protein that actually makes up human hair. It's a great solution for daily hair care. It takes less than a minute to apply and keeps your hair looking full all day. It also washes out really easily. Check out the results on one of our clients!

Confronting winter hair and those static blues
Static blues are when your hair goes, full throttle, into an unmanageable state. The noticeable difference in the hair structure starts at the end of October, and peak somewhere around December or January.
You wake up. It's freezing outside. You're getting ready for work. Your makeup looks good. Your outfit is well put together. As you pass the mirror you catch a glimpse of your hair. Argh! You realize your hair looks nothing shy of sticking your finger in a socket! It's too late to fuss. You have to leave. You put on your sweater, scarf, hat, and coat...and you're out the door.
Realization...you've entered the dreadful land of the static blues.
Where do they come from? Well...it's a combination of things. It's the cold outside and the heat inside. It's the clothes you wear to keep warm, but guess what...it's also things you do.
What is the solution? Here are some viable options from your concerned fellow sufferers at the Guy Thomas Salon:
1. Choose the right hair products (to find out what's right for you, consult with your stylist)
2. Shampoo, and if necessary condition your hair (75% of people need a good conditioner)
3. Towel dry, but not vigorously. Just press the dampness out, but keep some moisture.
4. Use pre-styling products such as Aestelance Styling Lotion, Hydrogel, and Trigel or L'Anza Straight Line
5. Dry your hair (make sure all products, and moisture is evenly distributed throughout the hair so that it has the same consistency)
6. Style hair, paying attention to split ends, cowlicks, and small hairs with products such as Uans Urban Attitude Molding Paste
Keep in mind...
More than any other season, winter is a time for hair maintenance. It is not the time to let hair grow out and neglect your haircut.
